Medications can cause serious dry mouth issues.

This is an important read from the NY Times:April 24, 2017 Q&A By C. CLAIBORNE RAY Q. What is it about so many medications that causes dryness, especially in the mouth? A. Dry mouth, also called xerostomia, is a frequent side effect of many commonly prescribed drugs, according to a 2015 review of research on treating dry mouth published in the journal Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management. Among the common culprits in xerostomia are drugs like benzodiazepines, prescribed for their calming effect; antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; some oral drugs used to reduce blood [...]

Our Bayonne Office Now Using BioActive fillings

Bioactive materials that are strong, esthetic and long-lasting offer an alternative to traditional composites, that are strong and esthetic but are passive and without bioactive potential materials, and to glass ionomers, that are bioactive but have poor esthetics and undesirable physical properties. The development of bioactive materials is inspired by nature, where water is the source of life. In the oral cavity, saliva is the life source and is rich with water, proteins and ionic components. Bioactive materials imitate nature and participate in this dynamic ionic exchange. They are water-based or contain [...]

“Must Read” from the New York Times

It’s bad enough that expertise is under attack these days from populist political movements that dismiss specialist opinion as just another establishment ruse. But lately expertise is being criticized from another direction, too — from would-be defenders of science. Consider the recent controversy over flossing. In August, a widely read Associated Press report suggested that, contrary to the advice of dentists everywhere, flossing didn’t necessarily foster good oral health. The report looked at 25 studies that had generally compared toothbrushing and flossing with toothbrushing alone and concluded that the evidence for [...]

Denture wearers can now get stability and retention.

For the millions of denture wearers stability of their dentures, especially the lower, has been a persistent problem which results not only in embarrassment but also can create significant health concerns including Type II diabetes, obesity, and gastrointestinal disease. Often patients go to their dentist for a new denture or a reline of their existing denture only to be disappointed when the new procedures do not result in an improvement in retention or stability of the denture. As a dentist it was frustrating that often nothing could be done to improve [...]

Why I Do What I Do

I have been coming to the Trudi Birger DVI clinic in Jerusalem for 6 years now. You may think that my mission is to improve the dental health of the poor children of Jerusalem, and to some extent that’s true, but there’s more. I believe in”Tikkun Olam.” Roughly translated that means to “heal the world.” And I don’t mean one tooth at a time. The photo posted here is of me with Dr. Nadal Alayyan. He is an Arab Palestinian dentist who will cancel his patients to work at the [...]

This is much more comfortable for our patients and exposes our patients to 80% LESS radiation than conventional methods. If you would like more information, just [...]
Dr. Dubowsky with Ethiopian children at the DVI clinic

From Bayonne to Jerusalem

Dr. Dubowsky with Ethiopian children at the DVI clinic Dr.Scott Dubowsky just returned from volunteering for his 5th visit to Israel to treat indigent children at the DVI Clinic in Jerusalem. Dr. Dubowsky was able to treat many children during his stay in the up to date facility that is entirely maintained through generous donations. Oral disease is a major problem for these underprivileged children because of poor diets and poor [...]
