To my patients, friends, and family:
For most, Spring signals the time of year for planting or clean up or a family holiday, but for me it’s the time I prepare to go to Jerusalem to treat the indigent children living there.
The DVI clinic is a very unique institution. Founded by the late Trudi Birger, herself a Holocaust survivor, the small clinic may well be the only non-sectarian clinic in the entire Middle East. On a given morning I will see a mix of Israeli, Palestinian, and Ethiopean children along with kids from the former Soviet Union. The need is great. There are over 200,000 children living below the poverty line in the greater Jerusalem area and the clinic can only see several thousand a year. The clinic runs on a bare bones budget. The dentists all donate their time and pay their own way to Israel. The supplies are also donated.
This year the loss of a foundation grant has forced the clinic to cut back its operation to four days a week, We are trying to treat as many children as possible but we cannot keep up with the need.
This Spring, in the time of renewal, I would ask you to consider a donation to the DVI Clinic. I can personally tell you that the need is great and every donation counts.
You can donate by going to the American Friends of DVI website at
